ABBE LeLOUTRE

THE GREAT DEFENDER
HEROES OF HANTS COUNTY
Abbe LeLoutre was a simple priest sent by his god from France to Acadia in the mid 1700s. While tasked with preaching a message of peace to the residents of Acadia, Abbe LeLoutre found himself as the unofficial leader of a militia movement that became the most feared and respected military force in Acadia. The residents of Acadia looked to LeLoutre and his fighting force as a dyke to protect them against the genocidal designs of the imperial powers. To consolidate his power base, LeLoutre moves the residents of Acadia northward to the Missaguash River, the river that currently separates New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. On the northern bank of the Missaguash River, LeLoutre constructs a large fort and then seeks to establish an “Acadia Nouveau” autonomously ruled by the residents of Acadia. The imperial powers react quickly to crush LeLoutre and his plans for regional autonomy. Weakened by famine and the military incompetence of Acadian allies, LeLoutre is unable to repel the imperial onslaught. His dyke is breached and the imperial powers implement their long feared genocidal designs: 15,000 French speaking residents are deported to foreign shores while all residents with ancient Maritime ancestry are summarily executed with no regard given to age or gender. LeLoutre is captured by the imperial powers and spends eight long years in prison. When released from prison, LeLoutre spends his final days advocating for impoverished Acadians exiled in France. In his last will and testament, he bequeaths all his earthly possessions to these exiled Acadians.
